Two men were stabbed and three arrested after a violent gang brawl broke out in the middle of the street.

Emergency services were called to Linwood Road, in Tranmere, shortly before 6.30pm on Wednesday evening after a fight broke out between a group of men.

Before paramedics and police arrived at the scene, one man was stabbed to the back.

The victim, in his 20s, was later rushed to hospital for treatment alongside a man in his 30s who also suffered cuts, bruising and a knife wound to his leg.

Three men, believed to have been involved, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of wounding with intent.

A large police cordon was quickly put in place at the scene and covers Linwood Road, a section of Downham Road and Mersey Park.

Officers with dogs were seen searching the children's play park shortly after the incident as forensic officers began their investigation in the area.

A mobile police station also arrived on Linwood Road around an hour after the fight.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We have arrested three people on suspicion of wounding with intent following an incident in Tranmere.

"At around 6.25pm this evening, Wednesday 3rd June, officers were called to Linwood Road following reports of a disturbance involving a group of males.

"A man in his 20s has been taken to hospital suffering from a stab wound to the back. His injury is not believed to be life threatening.

"A second man in his 30s suffered cuts and bruising and a laceration to his leg in the incident.

"Three males have been arrested and are currently in custody where the they will be interviewed by detectives."

House to house and CCTV enquiries are currently ongoing in the area as police appealed for witnesses to come forward and speak to officers.

The cordon is likely to remain in place for the rest of the evening and people are asked to avoid the area if possible.
