Police have arrested two men after a pair were caught licking their hands and wiping them on food at a Sainsbury’s store.

The pair were seen smearing their hands over meat, fresh food and fridge handles in the supermarket in Morecambe, Lancashire.

They carried out the sickening incident at around 1.45pm on Saturday at the store in Lancaster Road, sparking a police hunt.

The store was then thoroughly disinfected and the food had to be destroyed.

Police have now announced they have arrested two people in the town in connection with the incident.

A police spokesman said: “Inquiries into the incident continue.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped with the appeal. Your assistance is greatly appreciated as always.”

Launching the appeal on Wednesday, Inspector James Martin, of Lancashire Police, had said: “That anyone could think this sort of behaviour is appropriate or amusing even in normal times is beyond me but at this time of crisis when many people have been faced with empty shelves in some shops is flabbergasting.

“It is utterly despicable and I would appeal for anyone who knows who these people are to get in touch.

“I would also urge the individuals involved to do the right thing and come forward to speak to us – you must surely know that what you have done is wrong.

“During this current time we have seen many examples of people displaying the very best of humanity. This pair are sadly displaying some of the worst.”
