Trump sends Twitter into meltdown after cringeworthy Melania snub – ‘Forgot her name?!’

The president spoke in front of an energetic crowd in the US city of Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Saturday. During the speech, he reiterated past promises to release a “safe and effective” coronavirus vaccine before the end of the year.

He also vowed to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who died last week, with another woman.

One user said: “I have so, so many questions about everything in this clip, but at the top of the list: Did he f***ing forget Melania’s name again?”

Others focussed on a bizarre digression from the main topic at hand, in which the president blasted wind power in favour of fossil fuels to power his television at home.

The president said: “We don’t use wind, we actually use petroleum.

“We use petrol, because we like it to be on a lot. We don’t like to have lots of open gaps when the wind’s not blowing – we can’t watch President Trump!”

One Twitter user said: “Because nothing is funnier than burning fossil fuel instead of using renewable energy at a time climate change is wreaking havoc across the country.”

Another wrote: “For the television? He doesn’t understand how electricity is produced?”

One said: “So he says there’s no way wind power could generate electricity, but he uses ‘petroleum’ to power his TV?”

There are less than two months left before US citizens go to the polls to vote in the next president.

Mr Trump’s most prominent opponent and nominee for the Democrat party is Joe Biden, who has been consistently ahead in the polls.

In recent weeks, Mr Trump’s adult children including Ivanka Trump have been assisting him on the campaign trail.

Campaigns are seen as particularly important in swing states such as North Carolina because voters could reasonably be persuaded one way or the other before the voting date.

Marisa Kanof, director of the left-wing Swing Left organisation, told Marie Claire: “Swing states are the most critical states in the upcoming election.

“They’re essentially the tipping point of who’s going to win the electoral college, then win the presidency.”

Elsewhere in his North Carolina speech, Mr Trump criticised moves by the state’s Democrat governor Roy Cooper to impose social restrictions on the state in an effort to control the spread of COVID-19.

He said: “I hate to say, your governors got you shut down. It doesn’t look good here. I think your governor has to let this state open.”

According to local reports, seats at Mr Trump’s outdoor campaign venue were placed closely together and many attendees were not wearing face masks despite organisers encouraging this and checking temperatures.

Mr Trump added: “This Is the most important election we’ve ever had. Get out and vote.”
