Donald Trump reportedly slammed the the nation’s leading infectious disease expert as an ‘idiot’ and ‘a disaster’ during a phone call.
The president had a call with campaign staff on Monday morning, while some reporters listened in to hear the president speak ill of Dr Anthony Fauci.
According to CNN, Trump said: ‘People are tired of Covid. People are tired of hearing Fauci and these idiots, all these idiots who got it wrong.’
The president went on to add that he considered Fauci a ‘nice’ guy, but he’s causing too many problems. Trump, who has repeatedly clashed with Dr Fauci over expert coronavirus advice, claimed if the scientist was in charge, more than half a million people would have died in the US.

‘He’s been here for 500 years,’ Trump said. ‘Every time he goes on television, there’s always a bomb, but there’s a bigger bomb if you fire him. This guy’s a disaster.’
Trump also seemed to object to a poll released last month that showed 68% of Americans trusted Dr Fauci, while only 40% believed in the president.
It comes after Dr Fauci criticized Trump’s handling of the pandemic in an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday, and said he wasn’t surprised the president contracted Covid-19.
He said: ‘I was worried that he was going to get sick when I saw him in a completely precarious situation of crowded, no separation between people, and almost nobody wearing a mask.
‘When I saw that on TV, I said, “Oh my goodness. Nothing good can come out of that, that’s got to be a problem.” And then sure enough, it turned out to be a superspreader event.’
This was in response to the infamous Rose Garden ceremony event, where numerous Republican lawmakers became infected from coronavirus, after not wearing face masks and foregoing social distancing guidelines.
Earlier this month, Trump released a video that appeared to quote Dr Fauci in favor of the president.
But the expert responded that his words had been misconstrued and the video was a form of harassment toward him.
Trump is running against Joe Biden on a campaign filled with anger toward the ‘radical left’, with just weeks to go until the election.
Biden has called Trump ‘the worst president America has ever had’ and is running on trusting scientists to help lead the country out of the pandemic, while has killed 220,000 Americans.
Trump made fun of Biden for following scientists’ advice on how to slow the spread of coronavirus at a rally on Sunday in Carson City, Nevada.
‘If I listened totally to the scientists we would right now have a country that would be in a massive depression,’ he said.
The election starts on Tuesday November 3.
