Tony Smith is considering taking a risk by throwing Ryan Hall back in when Hull KR visit Catalans Dragons on Thursday.
The 33-year-old appeared to have played his last match of 2021 after suffering a torn bicep in the penultimate game of the regular season against Castleford Tigers earlier this month.
But the 15-try winger has been included in KR’s 21-man squad and could make a surprise comeback in the play-off semi-final in Perpignan.
“He’s got a tear in his bicep but they tell me he can’t do any more damage,” Smith said.
“It’s just whether he can have full function. If he can, we may risk it.
“It would be great if he plays but we’ll be OK if he’s not, as we found out last week.”
Rovers advanced to the semi-finals by beating Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium despite being without nine first-team players.
Smith will check on the fitness of forwards George Lawler, Korbin Sims and Albert Vete but is definitely without Rowan Milnes after he suffered a shoulder injury last week.
“We’ll be running our eye over Sims, Lawler and Vete,” said Smith.
“Albie has had a tight calf for the last couple of weeks. He’s still got that and it depends how well he’s functioning. If he’s functioning well enough we’ll go with him and if he’s not we won’t.
“George wasn’t close to playing last week in the end. He only just got his hand out of the pot last week and it’s a matter of pain management and function for him.
“It just depends when his functions are fully back and the pain is fully gone.
“Korbin has got an Achilles issue that he’s had for the last few weeks. We’ve just got to see how he functions tomorrow and whether we take the risk on him or not.”
Ethan Ryan was not named in the 21-man squad but Smith revealed the winger is keen to play after getting his pot off.
Ryan has not played since suffering a seemingly season-ending fractured scaphoid in the win over Wigan Warriors in August.
“He got his pot off yesterday,” said Smith. “It’s probably too soon for him but he’s putting his hand up to at least be considered.
“I’m not sure I can get him in the squad now; I only found out today that he’s putting his hand up after getting the cast off.
“I’m not sure whether I’m putting my hand up for him at this stage. But it’s good that there’s a couple there considering being available.”
