Tireless mum has cooked 4,500 meals to help vulnerable during lockdown

A MUM has cooked 4,500 meals from her kitchen to help vulnerable people during the pandemic.

Sophie Mears spends ten hours a day preparing 60 dinners — such as stews and chillis — for those who cannot go out.

An appeal raised £4,900 for costs and volunteers deliver them around Bridport, Dorset.

Sophie, 33, who has four kids aged four to nine, said: “Somebody said there was a family in need of a meal so I provided a few bits and it just grew from there.”

The school admin worker went on: “I’ve got several slow cookers so I have those going through the night and in the mornings I do bits I can’t do in the slow cookers.”

She said: "I have worked in catering in pubs and restaurants before and I've always enjoyed cooking.

"I think on average we have cooked roughly 60 meals a day for 12 weeks, six days a week, so I would say around 4,500 give or take."

The easing of the lockdown means her services are no longer as vital — and she is hanging up her community apron this weekend.

Sophie added: “I’m sad and emotional about it but it just feels like the right time to stop.”
