Three more people have died in Lancashire's hospitals after contracting coronavirus, the latest NHS figures show.

All three fatalities were registered at East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust, which manages hospitals in Blackburn and Burnley.

Two patients with Covid-19 died on Tuesday, September 22 and one patient died on Wednesday, September 23.

It comes after the number of coronavirus patients at the trust quadrupled in nearly three weeks with the local direction of public health issuing a 'red flag warning'.

No further deaths have been announced at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust or University Hospitals Of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

The region's hospital death toll now stands at 1,036 since the start of the pandemic.

Each day the NHS in England publishes the number of deaths recorded by each hospital trust in the last 24-hour period.

These are deaths where the person had tested positive for the virus or where COVID-19 was mentioned on their death certificate.

NHS England's daily figures sometimes include previously uncounted deaths that took place several days - or even weeks ago.

They do not include deaths in care homes or community settings.
