Frustrated Netflix users have said the service has crashed for them.

The streaming service said it is investigating after film fans reported outages.

Several shared pictures of their screens on Twitter, complaining they could not watch their favourite shows.

Responding to a customer, the service wrote on Twitter: "We are investigating the issue at the moment."

Website Down Detector, which monitors service outages, shows more than 1,500 people reported issues shortly after 10am today.

Users reported seeing an error message reading NSES-500 when they tried to watch Netflix.

According to social media, the issue is affecting people around the world, with Turkey and India among the countries where the service was not working.

One customer posted: "If your netflix is down and you have error NSES 500, don't worry, you're not alone, other people were also watching Vampire Diaries at 11am on a wednesday instead of working."

Another quipped: "The end of humanity is near."

People who use the service on their phone said it appeared to be working, however.

One wrote: "Netflix seems to be down in many countries, but works on phone app, not ideal but better than nothing... right?"
