The scenes in England Saturday night following the first day pubs reopened

England's Health Secretary Matt Hancock said 'largely, people have acted very responsibly'

Lockdown easing in England on Saturday saw pubs, hairdressers, cinemas and barbers reopen their doors for the first time in three months.

Many businesses welcomed the return after months of having to shut up shop. But the reopening of pubs and the scenes that followed has drawn a mixed reaction.

Pictures from across England on Saturday night show huge crowds and raucous scenes, with many not following the social distancing rules.

The chairman of the Police Federation said "What's crystal clear is people can't/won't social distance."

England's Health Secretary, Matt Hancock on the other hand, claims that "largely, people have acted responsibly."

He said: "Well I think that from what I’ve seen, although there’s some pictures to the contrary, very, very largely people have acted responsibly.”

He added: “So overall I’m pleased with what happened yesterday. It was really good to see people out and about and largely, very largely social distancing.”

Here are some photos showing what streets and pubs in England looked like on Saturday night:
