The Platform ending explained: The meaning behind Netflix’s horror movie

SPANISH science fiction horror film The Platform has left viewers too scared to sleep.

Available to watch on Netflix, the gory thriller has not only left film fans terrified, but with unanswered questions about the mysterious ending. Here's all you need to know...

What is The Platform about?

Netflix viewers have reported being too scared to sleep after watching Spanish sci-fi horror flick The Platform.

The film was released on the streaming service on March 20, 2020, and it's keeping viewers even more on edge during the coronavirus lockdown.

Set in a vertical prison where food is dished out on a travelling platform, inmates at the top get to eat first, while those at the bottom are left with only their scraps.

In what many deem as a metaphor for greed and wealth distribution - if everyone only ate what they needed there would be enough for everyone and would reach the lowest level.

The synopsis reads: "A vertical prison with one cell per level. Two people per cell. Only one food platform and two minutes per day to feed from up to down. An endless nightmare trapped in The Hole.

"A slab of food descends floor by floor in a prison.

"The inmates above eat heartily, leaving those below starving and desperate. A rebellion is imminent."

The Platform ending explained

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, Spanish actors Iván Massagué, Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan and Emilio Buale Coka star in the dark thriller.

The storyline follows lead character Goreng, who voluntarily entered the prison in exchange for a college degree.

He travels through the levels of the prison meeting different inmates and is told by a fellow prisoner that the prison is an experiment in “spontaneous solidarity”.

Goreng then takes a stand against the greedy inmates on the top levels by enlisting the help of prisoner Baharat to help him divide the food into equal rations.

But the journey to the bottom of the prison takes a dark twisted turn.

The movie ends ambiguously - left open to interpretation as to the fate of the characters - leaving many viewers confused and with unanswered questions.

Thinking that they had made it to the bottom, Goreng and Baharat get out at level 333.

But little do they know - there are more levels below as the platform continues to move down.

They are left stranded but meet a girl who turns out to be fellow prisoner's daughter.

In one of many twists in the tale, Baharat succumbs to injuries and dies, leaving Goreng to take the girl back to the top to find her father.

But following a strange hallucination where he saw another inmate Trimagasi telling him that his “journey is over”, he unsuspectedly walks away from the platform as the young girl travels to the top...

Director Gaztelu-Urrutia told Digital Spy: "Ultimately I wanted it to be open to interpretation, whether the plan worked and the higher-ups even care about the people in the pit.

"We actually did film a different ending of the girl arriving at the first level, but we took it out of the movie.

"I'll leave what happens to your imagination."

He added: "At the end of the day, the movie isn't going to change the world, but it may change the viewer.

"The film doesn't portray anyone as particularly bad or good; it's all about asking what would you do if you found yourself in level 200, or in level 48.

"It's about the limits of your own solidarity and how easy it is to be a good person when you're comfortably in level 10, but how hard it is to do so when at level 182."
