Angel di Maria claims he never asked to wear the No.7 shirt at Manchester United and actually had his eyes on a different squad number.

The Argentine international was handed the iconic squad number at Old Trafford after he arrived from Real Madrid in the summer of 2014.

Di Maria struggled to make an impact at United with some fans wondering if he suffered under the pressure of a shirt number worn by club legends Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 31-year-old would spend just one season at United before moving on to play for Paris Saint-Germain where he has managed to revitalise his career.

Upon his arrival at the Parc des Princes the midfielder selected the No.11 shirt, and he admits he'd have loved to have worn Ryan Giggs' famous number at United too.

“I don’t really know. When I arrived, I saw that the number 11 was available," Di Maria told Ligue 1 when asked why he took the No.11 shirt at PSG.

“It’s a shirt number I wore a lot when I was younger, and I was keen to get once again.

“At Real Madrid, number 11 was already taken, so I took 22. At Manchester United they gave me number 7, I didn’t get a choice. I would have liked 11 but there we are. Here, I had a choice, so I chose 11!”
