VIEWERS are planning to “give up” on BBC period drama The Luminaries after weeks of confusion.
The show – which follows the story of Anna Wetherell (Eve Hewson) who has travelled from Britain to New Zealand to start a new life – has been branded “baffling” and “hard going” to watch.
One confused Twitter user wrote: “Just caught up with #TheLuminaries #Luminaries ep 5 on @BBCiPlayer. The storyline is getting more baffling and preposterous.”
Another tweeted: “Watching ep4 of #theluminaries and really I don’t know what’s going on most of the time or why. Hate to give up on a tv drama but this might be the last one for me.”
“Watched #TheLuminaries last night. well, what we could see of it,” added another.
“Having to guess who is doing what to whom rather detracts from any enjoyment. hard going. will give episode 2 a go tonight and then give up if the lighting doesn't improve.”
A fourth commented: “#TheLuminaries what in gods name is it all about!! I’m 3 episodes in and none the wiser. Think I might give up! Had hoped for a good drama but instead I’ve got a total mystery!”
The Luminaries first aired in June on BBC One and the full series is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Since its debut, fans have complained about the show’s “dire” sound blunders as well as the confusing narrative.
The show is an adaption of Eleanor Catton's Man Booker Prize winning novel of the same name.
