PLANNING to flash your pasty pins in next week’s summer scorcher? It’s time to master that faux glow.
Self-tanning can be a challenge and getting it right without patchy palms or streaky shins takes practice and, of course, the right products.
So, which instant tans are easy to use and don’t have that annoying biscuity smell?
Yasmin Harisha tests the latest lotions and rates them out of ten.
BEST FOR VALUE
Jess Wright Instant Wash Off Tan (£1, poundland.co.uk): For a bargain tan, you can’t beat the price of the former Towie star’s range.
Jess helped to develop this instant wash-off fake tan which promises to treat you to “summer radiance all year round”.
Yasmin says: “This thick cream takes a while to rub in, but a small amount goes a long way. You definitely need to use a mitt when applying as it takes a bit of work."
"Even though it’s supposed to be a wash-off tan, it sticks around, so a bottle goes a long way.”
BEST FOR MOISTURISING
Lavera Instant-tanning Lotion (£14.90, laverauk.co.uk): This claims it develops into a sun-kissed, streak-free, radiant look in less than an hour.
It also contains moisturising and nourishing ingredients – organic macadamia, sunflower oil and shea butter.
Yasmin says: “This liquid is super-runny, which makes it hard to apply. It is also colourless, which makes it difficult to see where I have applied it."
“I tried it out on my legs, but it didn’t make a dramatic difference. It did moisturise them though, which was nice.”
BEST FOR EASE OF USE
Cocoa Brown 1 Hour Tan Mousse 150ml (£7.99, boots.com): This has become a firm favourite for bronzed beauties such as Love Island’s Olivia Buckland, a brand ambassador.
It features accelerating ingredients that promise beautifully bronzed, radiant skin in just one hour. It claims that the golden colour lasts up to seven days and fades evenly.
Yasmin says: “The mousse is easy to apply and I like the foamy texture. It goes on smoothly and the colour is a lovely shade."
“It smells fresh and florally as well. Perfect for faking a beach bronze.”
HERE are self-tanning tips by Carly Hobbs, brand ambassador for Sienna X Tanning. POWER SHOWER: Rinse off body products then buff all over with an exfoliator to ensure tan can glide on. Shaving should be done 12 hours before and waxing 24 hours prior.
MASTER THE MITT: Never use a flannel, you need a tanning mitt. Try the Sienna X Luxury one (£3.32, superdrug.com). It’s soft and velvety so pushes tan on to skin, meaning it doesn’t drag.
FACETIME: Use a specialist tan product for your face. Tanning drops that add to your usual day or night cream are ideal.
CLEAN SWEEP: Keep your tan well moisturised – I love Sol de Janerio Brazilian Bum Bum Cream (£18, cultbeauty.co.uk).
BEST FOR QUICK-DRYING
Utan X Jamie Skin Idol (£24, utan.co.uk/products/skin-idol): This has been hailed as giving a tan which looks like a “real-life Instagram filter” and is gaining a cult following thanks to it setting in just 60 seconds, meaning no orange bed sheets. Hurrah!
Yasmin says: “The lavender smell is lovely. It really does give an instant photo-ready finish."
"It goes on smoothly and left me with a natural glow. I applied it to my face, chest and legs, left, and it gave me great definition."
"I felt like I’d spent a day tanning on holiday – my favourite.”
BEST FOR TRICKY SPOTS
St Moriz Spray Tan In A Can (£12.99, superdrug.com): St Moriz’s latest Spray Tan In A Can claims its quick drying no-blend formula is great for the ultimate glow on the go.
It also features a non-sticky formula, with powerful ingredients that help moisturise your skin as you tan. It’s also vegan.
Yasmin says: “I was a bit apprehensive about a spray over lotion, but it’s really good for tricky-to-reach places. The downside is it comes out clear and fast.
“It is quick drying and has a nice floral smell and, developed into the darkest bronze, so go easy when you use it.”

Clarins Milky Lotion (£21, clarins.co.uk): This claims to be a non-oily and lightweight instant tan with a milky lotion texture.
Designed as a quick-drying formula, it also contains plant extracts to keep the skin soft while leaving it with a streak-free, subtle glow. It can be reapplied for a deeper colour.
Yasmin says: “This is one of my favourites. It is deeply nourishing and the smooth texture spreads well across my body. The shade is a very convincing bronze, but still natural. It doesn’t streak at all. A golden glow that really suits my skin tone.”
