The first trailer for Toy Story spin-off movie Lightyear has been released and reveals the real Buzz Lightyear before he becomes a Space Ranger superhero.

Pixar's animated feature film tells the origins of Toy Story's most popular characters Buzz Lightyear.

The film, in which Buzz will be voiced by Chris Evans, will reveal how a 'young test pilot that became the Space Ranger' and it’s described in the synopsis as “the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear”.

The trailer shows Buzz going through Lightyear testing on an experimental spaceship before blasting off into space and slingshotting around a star.

Buzz is also seen on an alien planet, getting tangled in the tentacles of an alien monster, and dressing in a version of his iconic white, green, and purple space armour.

The apt soundtrack is David Bowie's iconic song 'Starman', and the trailer also teases Buzz's iconic catchphrase: "To infinity, and beyond.", and shows glimpses of other Star Command officers, and a robotic ginger cat

Toy Story fans went wild for the trailer and rushed to Twitter to tell of their excitement.

One said: "That's what he looks like with his purple Hood off. I've wondered what he looks like under there for 27 years."

Another said: "This looks really good. Love the use of David Bowie Starman's song, perfect for this teaser. Nice to see the human version of Buzz. Looking forward to seeing what this movie has in store."

A third commented: "Bro... my inner child just jumped for joy." Preach. It.

A fourth wrote: "Okay this looks amazing though? I haven't been this excited about Toy Story stuff since like... 2002."

A fifth added: "The trailer for #Lightyear looks, in a word - incredible. Every time @Pixar bring out a new film I'm blown away with the developments in the CGI. And with @ChrisEvans at the helm you know it's gonna be good. Can't wait to see it."

Chris Evans' discussed the plot of the movie in a tweet, saying: "Just to be clear, this isn't Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on."

Chris replaced Tim Allen as the voice of iconic Pixar character after portrayed the toy spaceman in four Toy Story movies and a Buzz Light year feature film.

The film will be released on 17 June 2022.
