THE weekend before Christmas is manic, with half of us hitting the supermarket today.
It is easy to overspend as you rush around the aisles.
So here are some quick and easy ways to save, including opting for chicken over the traditional turkey . . .
POULTRY SAVINGS: The mad rush for turkeys leaves super-markets with a lot of surplus chicken, which they will discount. If you are trying to stay on a budget and have a large family to feed, think about swapping from turkey to chicken. It could save you plenty and the kids will never guess.
PILE ON THE VEG: Aldi and Lidl have already slashed the cost of festive veg to 15p a bag. I recommend stocking up for Christmas and the days and weeks to come, chopping up and freezing lots for January dinners. If you are not near an Aldi or Lidl, target the “reduced” section of your local supermarket each day in the run-up to Christmas. Lots of extra stock can mean rock-bottom prices. If you are happy to risk it and leave your food shop until Christmas Eve, supermarkets sometimes even give away surplus stock for FREE.
DESSERT STORM: While I love the exciting sweet treats on offer at the moment, a little bit of DIY baking could save you some cash.n Why not have a go at the two-ingredient Nutella cake that has become a viral sensation, serving it after your Christmas dinner? All you need is a jar of Nutella (£1.70 at Tesco) and five eggs (£1.50 for a box of six, also at Tesco) and you can make a cake that serves at least six people. See petitecook.com for more details.
STAY IN THE PRESENT: Last year, the supermarkets’ sales started on Christmas Eve. I would definitely suggest a browse in the clothing and toiletries aisles for bargain last-minute presents. I got lots of half- price gift sets last year and also stashed a couple of them away for birthday presents later in the year.
