A student, whose 'freshers flu' turned out to be terminal brain cancer, will be aided by Peter Kay as he returns to the spotlight in a bid to raise money for her cancer treatment.

Laura Nuttall, 21, was just weeks into her International Relations degree as she began to suffer with headaches and nausea.

However, the Everton fan brushed it off as a common infection and continued with her studies.

But when she applied to join the Royal Navy reserves, an eye test required for entry revealed something much more serious.

They found swelling in her optic nerve and recommended her to take further tests.

This led to her being diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, the most aggressive brain cancer in adults.

Laura has previously undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery at The Christie Hospital in Manchester.

She is now having immunotherapy in Germany and a dendritic cell vaccination, with each vaccine costing £27,000.

To help with costs, Peter Kay, who has been largely absent from the public eye for the last three years, will host two live Q&As in aid of Laura, from Barrowford near Nelson in Lancashire.

The shows will take place at the O2 Apollo Manchester on August 7 and tickets go on sale on July 30 at 9am.

The news was announced on the comedian's Twitter account, alongside a link to a fundraising page, entitled Doing It For Laura.
