A student who started making dresses from her bedroom is now dressing Love Island stars and Instagram influencers.

Megan Ruiter, from Birkenhead,Wirral, has always known she wanted to work in the fashion industry and is hoping to make a big statement with her own fashion show.

The 22-year-old has now completed her four-year Liverpool John Moores University course, set up her own fashion brand and has been helping people with their mental health through the pandemic.

The former St John Plessington student said: "It was my stepdad who taught me to sew at the age of seven.

"I just started making clothes for myself to wear to school.

"Then I took textiles at GCSE and A Level and went on to do my degree in fashion design."

Megan said she has often been complimented on how fast she can sew and can make a full dress within two hours.

And it was her love of sewing and fashion that got her through her own mental health battle and acted as a springboard to set up her own brand.

She said: "I had been going through a bit of a rough patch because I was taking a medication for my acne and one of the side effects was depression.

"I was feeling quite low, but just decided to set up an Instagram account and people would message me.

"It was a lot of bespoke items at first and alterations, and slowly I was able to create my own designs and sell them too."

Her Ruiter.co.uk Instagram now has more than 12,000 followers and remarkably she still makes every single piece sold herself, but has upgraded from her bedroom with the help of mum, Gail Formston, and stepdad Malcolm, both 51.

Megan said: "I hope to get to the position to hire someone in the future, it can get pretty stressful at times, especially when I have been working alongside uni.

"I now work from our extension, my family has been so supportive.

"My mum is my number one fan, there is even a video of her pushing my business card into Prince Harry's hand when he came to Birkenhead in 2019."

Megan says she picks up inspiration for her handmade glam designs from everywhere, from festival fashion like Glastonbury to stylish girls getting on the bus.

She said: "I can be on a night out and other girls might be wondering what I am looking at, but I am just looking at their clothes for inspiration.

"I have worked with Elma Pazar from Love Island and a couple of Instagram influencers and models like Steph Symonds."

Megan has also been trying to share her love of sewing and how it has helped her, she said: "Mental health is really important to me, and I think it particularly effect young girls my age so through the pandemic I sent out sewing pack and taught girls how to sew and make a top.

"I think just keeping busy with something can really help.

"And I am self-taught now, I pick up everything from YouTube videos - if there is a problem, there will be a YouTube video to help."
