Strictly Come Dancing professional Neil Jones has been left devastated after being told he won't receive a celebrity partner this year, it has been reported.

The 38-year-old was paired up for the first time ever last year with footballer Alex Scott since joining the show in 2016.

His ex Katya has had celebrity partners for years, and Neil had hoped that after his success with Alex in 2019 that he would be coupled up again in 2020.

However, the BBC have decided against it and his role has been reduced to background dancer again.

Neil Jones won't receive a partner on Strictly this year

A source told Daily Star Sunday : "After a lot of discussion it was decided that Neil will be dropped from the line-up of professional dancers, so he won’t be partnered with a contestant.

"He will still be part of the show, but only in group routines. So viewers won’t see much of him any more."

They added that it had been "tough" for Neil to hear the news and that he felt as though he's gone backwards.

This comes as Katya is tipped to be paired up with Nicola Adams in the first same-sex Strictly pair.

It is likely that Neil's role has been reduced due to there being less celebrities competing.

Instead of there being 15 pairings, there are 12 with the series starting a month later than it usually would.

Among those in this year's line-up include Made in Chelsea's Jamie Laing, EastEnders star Maisie Smith and GMB's Ranvir Singh.
