John, who won the third series of Bake Off in 2012, said he was initially worried about online trolls, but he has been overwhelmed with the support from fans.

Speaking with host Tess Daly, John said: "It really is a privilege and an honour to be in this position because I think if I'd have seen two lads or lasses in this position when I was a little lad, life would've been that bit easier.

"Thank you for letting me be a part of it."

John's partner was revealed as Johannes Radebe, who joined the Strictly Come Dancing cast in 2020 after a successful career on South Africa's version of the show.

Johannes said: "I had a glimpse of John doing a side step, side step, and I think the man has got rhythm.

"That is all I can ask for."

Fans watching at home shared their excitement about the couple's pairing.

Lynsey said: "Obsessed with John Whaite, can't wait to see him dancing with Johannes."

Staffordshire councillor Joe Porter added: "SUPER EXCITED to watch John Whaite and Johannes Radebe become first ever male Strictly same-sex couple!!"

Elsewhere, viewers praised Strictly Come Dancing and the BBC for introducing stronger LGBT+ representation and visibility.

One fan said: "If we had more same-sex couples doing visible things... a lot of gay people would still be alive today."

John and Johannes are the second same-sex couple to compete in Strictly Come Dancing after Nicola Adams and Katya Jones who competed in the 2020 series but were forced to pull out after Katya tested positive for coronavirus.

John and Johannes will dance the tango for their first dance.
