Do you like the look of your house enough to get a portrait made of it?
Strathaven based artist Mhairi Anderson’s new project ‘Draw Ma Hoose’ is exactly that.
Mhairi, who is a freelance illustrator, studied Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee.
She grew up in Strathaven and moved back after university, after doing a masters in art, society and publics.
She has been working on ‘Draw Ma Hoose’ since mid 2018. People send her in pictures of their houses and gardens for Mhairi to draw.
She said: “I work from photos that people send me in. I started doing things like wedding invitations and such, and it all just went from there.
“I really like drawing older houses with intricate designs and big gardens. They are probably the best.”
One of her favourite works so far is a drawing of Eastwood House in Glasgow.
“It was definitely a challenge as the house is so detailed but I loved the old feel of it and loved the finished project.”
The 26-year-old artist currently works out of her own studio, which is in her Strathaven home.
She also recently drew out a calendar, with each month being a different drawing of a Strathaven shop front.
“I didn’t tell anyone I was doing the calendar,” she told us. “It was really good fun and the shopkeepers have responded really well to it.
“Since I am from Strathaven and still live here, I thought it would be a nice thing to feature some local business.
“I was also asked to design the label for ‘The Glesart’ gin by McLeans. I incorporated some of Glassford’s landmarks with the botanics that are used in the liqueur. I was so happy with how that turned out. I love working on local projects and helping local business out.”
Mhairi also founded Creative Strathaven, a community art organisation that is based in the town.
“I do quite a lot with Creative Strathaven and it is all on a volunteer basis.
“We run the Christmas Market and have various art projects and workshops. There are classes on embroidery, jewellery making and all things creative.”
