Spruce up your home without breaking the bank with these savvy DIY ideas

PLANNING to spruce up your home this spring? I have been spending a bit of the time indoors doing DIY.

But while we can’t get out and about, you can still update your place without breaking the bank on unnecessary items. Try these savvy ideas.

Not too paint-ful. Painting your home can cost a fair bit, even if you do it yourself.

So at the moment, you might fancy just giving smaller areas a lick of paint.

Get creative — and if you have old pots of paint, think about a pattern featuring all the colours. Use masking tape to cover off sections. Or you could do borders round your sockets.

Window dressing. Give your curtains a perfect pleat to instantly boost any room. Cleaning guru Mrs Hinch swears by one easy trick to create the perfect curtain pleat.

Cut some pipe insulation into sections (or use loo-roll tubes, cut in half) and slot them on to the curtain rail to make equal partitions. Windows will look sleek without spending money.

Bathroom glam. Who doesn’t like a little sparkle? Update grubby tile grouting with a bit of glitter. Take after the savvy mum who used Crystal Clear Glitter Sealant (£14.99 on eBay) to create sparkly grout. Luxe for less!

Little things. Updating small fixtures will give your place a lift too. It costs less than a major overhaul and can make all the difference.

For example, try changing light switch and plug socket covers from plastic to new metal ones. I like those sold at for £3.49.

They usually cost £12.58, so you save £9.09. And they are in that ever-popular grey shade seen on celeb Instagram feeds.

Recycle and reuse. Loose Women’s Stacey Solomon has the right idea. She made pretty DIY bird-feeders by attaching used glass candle jars to wood bases and filling with seeds.
