A former footballer jailed for attacking his ex-girlfriend with a metal bar during a horrendous three-day ordeal has been slammed online for tweets posted after his prison release.

Reece Thompson, 25, was jailed in April last year after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm and inflicting grievous bodily harm on former girlfriend Danielle Thomas.

He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison but released in January after serving just nine months.

After his jailing, Ms Thomas bravely spoke out about her assault saying it left her ‘fearing for her life’.

Thompson, who has played for Retford United, Boston United and Guiseley AFC, was accused of smashing two mirrors over his victim’s head and rubbing the smashed glass into her neck.

She also claimed she was forced to eat paint by Thompson and said he had threatened to make her run down the street naked.

Ms Thomas, a mum-of-two, told Lincolnshire Live last year that she still has flashbacks to the brutal attack but chose to come forward to help other victims of domestic violence.

Since his early release last month, the ex-footballer has been fishing for jobs online and even made reference to the assault while joking on Twitter.

On January 4, he tweeted: ‘Need to dig the boots back out. anyone need a few goals banging in? Haha.’

One football fan called him a ‘vile coward’ in response and another said he showed ‘no remorse’, while some called for him to be given a ‘second chance’.

Jason Butterworth commented: ‘No club in their right mind would want his kind on their books.’

But in one response Thompson appeared to make light of the attack.

Steve Parker tweeted: ‘I’ve been redecorating the back bedroom and spilt some paint. Do I hit the Mrs with an iron bar & make her lick it up or just use a cloth?’

The ex-footballer wrote back: ‘Pretty sure from post examination no paint or other substances were found in the persons stomach/system. So that rules the paint part out.’

He finished the tweet with a smiling face and thumbs up emoji.

Thompson declined to comment on the social media posts.

In her interview with Lincolnshire Live last year, Ms Thomas said: ‘Reece repeatedly hit me.

‘He hit me with an iron bar, broke my jaw and smashed a mirror over my head.

‘I was made to lick paint up off the floor and then he smashed another mirror over my head.

‘It was when he picked up the second mirror that I thought I was going to die, I screamed for him to stop or he would kill me.

‘He told me to get my arms down and take the beating like a real person.’
