Shotts Bon Accord manager John McKeown says Saturday’s Scottish Junior cup tie with Thorniewood United was peculiar - but victory had to be achieved no matter the circumstances.

The Hannah Park side prevailed 1-0 against West of Scotland Conference B opposition through a Danny Burns goal in the second half to reach the fourth round, where they will meet Rossvale.

Both sides had an abundance of chances and Thorniewood had two big openings which Shotts narrowly escaped from. But McKeown was pleased with his side’s endeavour.

“I felt we dominated possession and chances in the first half, but they were hitting us on the counter,” said McKeown. “I felt we played some decent enough stuff but going in at half-time 0-0 made things difficult.

“We hit the bar and we missed some good chances with headers, and shots outside the box. Thorniewood were stuffy and really hard to break down.

“We knew they would come at us in the second half and they did. They missed a massive chance and they missed an open goal almost. Then I started to think it was going to be our day.

“We probably had the most chances in the game but they had the better chances in it. When we got our noses in front, I actually thought we were comfortable in seeing the game out.

“It was a typical cup tie - win at all costs. All of our academy teams were at the game too so it was good to get the win for them.”

Shotts return to league action on Saturday. The Conference A table-toppers take on Lugar Boswell Thistle, who are third from bottom in the 16-team division.

“We didn’t have our problems to seek with player availability, so to get through to the next round of the cup was great,” added McKeown. “Thorniewood gave us a real test so now we need to kick on and do well in the league.

“Lugar Boswell are a strange team and we need to be really wary of that. They’ve found a wee bit of form and they will come to us without any pressure.”
