An Aberdeenshire school remains closed today after a second staff member tested positive for Covid-19.

Peterhead Central School had been due to open on Wednesday, August 12, but severe weather forced it to remain closed.

A member of staff then tested positive for the virus which prompted health officials from NHS Grampian to launch a probe alongside Test and Protect procedures.

The school remains closed and a number of staff members are self-isolating as a precaution after a second confirmed case was found.

Peterhead Central School has been closed by health and council officials

A statement from NHS Grampian said: “A second case of Covid-19, connected with a primary school in Peterhead, has been detected.

“Our investigations are continuing and we are working closely with Aberdeenshire Council.

“They have delayed the reopening of the school in the meantime.”

Head teacher Paula Musson sent a letter to all parents where she thanked them for their patient and assured them they were working hard to get the school open again.

She wrote: “The initial reason for the closure of the school on Wednesday was because of the severe weather that hit the area, leading to water leaking through the flat roof of the building.

“This has since been rectified. At the same time, we were in discussion with NHS Grampian’s Public Health team, following confirmation that a member of staff had tested positive for coronavirus.

“As a result of that discussion, it was agreed that the school should not reopen today (Thursday).

“And I can now confirm that the school will remain closed tomorrow.

“We have followed the national Test and Protect guidance and a small number of staff are currently self-isolating as a precaution.

“In that time, a second confirmed case has been detected.

“We continue to be in discussion with Public Health and are making arrangements to ensure suitable staffing numbers for the school to reopen.

“I will provide a further update tomorrow as to whether we will be able to open on Monday.”

Meanwhile, a student at St Ambrose High School in Coatbridge has tested positive for coronavirus.

The pupil is now self-isolating after displaying mild symptoms on Thursday morning but had not returned to school.
