A pensioner has been left fighting for his life and two other people are in a serious condition in hospital after a horror smash on a busy Scots road.

The two-car collision involved a Nissan Juke and a Volvo V40.

Three people were rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by paramedics.

The 85-year-old female driver of the Volvo was left seriously injured while her 87-year-old male passenger is said to be in critical condition.

The 32-year-old male driver of the Nissan is in a serious but stable condition.

Police have launched a probe into the incident and are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.

Sergeant Iain McIntyre of the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Dalkeith is appealing for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with dash-cam footage to contact 101 quoting reference number 2518 of 24 October.
