A bank in Ashby has closed as part of a major shake-up to the firm's high street presence.

Santander announced earlier this year that the branch in Ashby was set for closure along with a further 110 branches across the country.

The branch officially closed on Thursday, July 29, meaning Santander customers would have to travel to Swadlincote or Burton to visit their next nearest bank branch.

Both Burton and Swadlincote branches, both in High Street, escaped the axe.

The closure is due to a change in customer demand, which has led to a 33 per cent drop in branch transactions in the two years before the pandemic, supported by a 50 per cent drop in 2020 alone, said a Santander spokesman.

Santander says most branches earmarked for closure are within three miles of another branch, with the furthest being only five miles away.

The National Federation of SubPostmasters has also confirmed people in Ashby can do their banking at nearby post offices instead, Leicestershire Live reported.

The three nearest post offices to the original Santander branch are the Ashby post office in Market Street, the Blackfordby Mobile Service post office in Sandtop Lane and the Moira post office in Ashby Road.

The services they offer include deposits, free cash withdrawals and balance checks, as well as face-to-face access to government services, bill payments, foreign currency, travel insurance, and postal services.

A spokesperson for the National Federation of SubPostmasters said: "On 29 July 2021, Santander bank, Ashby de la Zouch branch, 24 Market Street, Ashby de la Zouch, closed.

"This will doubtless be disappointing to Santander’s customers in Ashby de la Zouch. However, alternative banking provision is available to local residents at post office branches nearby.

"Each of these branches offers banking services - including deposits, free cash withdrawals and balance checks, as well as offering face-to-face access to government services, bill payment, foreign currency, travel insurance and, of course, postal services.

"There are currently 2,000 free-to-use ATMs installed across the UK post office network also.

"Post offices are proving vital to retaining people’s and business’s access to cash as the banks continue to desert the high street in order to cut costs and increase their profits.

"Every post office plays a vital role within the heart of the local community. Post offices provide a reliable and essential service which has continued at a high standard across the whole of the UK throughout the pandemic."
