Ryder Cup 2021 LIVE: Latest scores and updates from USA vs Europe fourballs matches

Europe continue 43rd Ryder Cup preparations with practice rounds

Follow all the latest action as the 43rd edition of the Ryder Cup finally gets underway at Whistling Straits.

Team Europe are defending the trophy after their triumphant victory at Le Golf National in 2018, however, they arrive on the shore of Lake Michigan as clear underdogs against one of the strongest American sides in memory. Steve Stricker’s Team USA contains eight of the world’s top 10 players and an abundance of major winners, although Europe still boast the best-ranked player of all in Jon Rahm. There remain questions, as ever, over whether the US team will be able to function as a unit, too, as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka’s feud simmers in the background.

Europe drew first blood in the morning foursomes with Spanish duo Rahm and Sergio Garcia seeing off the formidable US pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The USA soon struck back, however, with Dustin Johnson and Open champion Collin Morikawa beating Viktor Hovland and Paul Casey before Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele proved far too good for Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy. Koepka and Daniel Berger then saw off Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick ahead of the afternoon fourballs. Follow all the latest updates below:

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger A/S

Johnson rolls in a nervy 5ft putt to tie the second hole with a par after Schauffele found trouble off the tee and could only make bogey.

Ryder Cup 2021: DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton A/S

DeChambeau rolls in a 4ft birdie putt after that brilliant flop shot. This match in particular promises to provide fireworks.

Ryder Cup 2021: DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton

DeChambeau uncorks a huge drive but it’s tugged left and it hits a spectator on the leg. Hatton finds the fairway and his approach is absolutely exquisite, and it’s almost within gimme range. Scheffler’s effort is poor and leaves him with a huge birdie putt. DeChambeau’s attempt is better, though, gouging the ball out of the rough, and he’ll have a much better chance.

Next up on the tee, it’s the blockbuster entertainment act the crowd in Wisconsin have all been waiting for. Bryson DeChambeau emerges, one headphone still in for a last bit of pump-up music before he unleashes that driver. He’s partnering Scottie Scheffler, a Ryder Cup rookie who’s enjoyed a fine season on the PGA Tour. On the European team, Jon Rahm is straight back into the action, paired with Tyrrell Hatton.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger A/S

Schauffele holes it! A brilliant putt. Wiesberger holds his nerves, though, and knocks his own in to start the match with a half.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

It’s Wiesberger who plays the best approach into the first green. A brilliant start by the rookie, whose approach finishes inside 10ft and that’ll be a great look at birdie. Schauffele’s pitch comes up a little shorter but he putted very well this morning. Casey is safely in for par.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

No nerves from Wiesberger on the first tee, who hits a lovely drive straight down the fairway, joining Casey who took the honour. Johnson pushes his drive a little right but the rough isn’t long there.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

Johnson and Schauffele both played excellently this morning, although it is, perhaps, somewhat surprising to see the latter separated from Cantlay. The Americans must be considered strong favourites to take down Casey and Wiesberger.

So here we go. It’s time for the afternoon fourballs and, in the first group, Bernd Wiesberger makes his long-awaited Ryder Cup debut. We spoke to the Austrian last week ahead of his “life-changing” debut.

Despite Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia’s brilliant takedown of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, Team Europe were served a sharp reminder of the US’s quality in the foursomes on Friday morning
