Ricky Gervais has warned that the upcoming series of After Life will be the ‘most shocking’ yet - with one scene being ‘the worst thing he’s made for television’.

The award-winning series - following Ricky’s character Tony as he adjusts to life following his wife Lisa’s death from cancer - has become a worldwide smash hit, breaking hearts as well as leaving people in tears with laughter.

With the third ( and potentially final ) series well on its way, Ricky has warned there’s a controversial scene that will be sure to rile up some viewers.

“Series two was bad enough, but in series three, there are two of the cast who do the worst thing I’ve ever seen made for television,” he told Daily Star .

“I was cutting it down and thinking, ‘Even Netflix won’t put that out’.”

However he added the show is his ‘best one yet’, praising the cast for helping it get completed despite the ongoing issue of Covid.

“Every single person in the cast is incredible… and I take all the credit!” he joked.

While he’s intent on not giving anything away, the only thing he assured viewers of his the show’s beloved dog won’t die.

So at least that’s something, seeing as After Life has made no shortage of shocking deaths that have tugged at the heartstrings of all watching.

The latest series is set to drop towards the end of this year, breaking tradition of the previous two seasons airing during March 2019 and 2020 respectively.

However, a release date is not yet confirmed by the streaming service.

But despite it being a National Television Award comedy winner, don’t expect the new series to be a complete barrel of laughs.

At the end of season two, Tony was seen narrowly avoiding a second suicide attempt following the death of his father.

Overcome with grief so soon after the death of Lisa (Kerry Godliman), Tony was seen on the verge of ending his life, with a last-minute saviour coming in the form of his dad’s care nurse, Emma (Ashley Jensen).

Wanting to give their blooming relationship a go, Tony is seen inviting her into his house before the credits rolled.

At the announcement of the third season, Ricky has insisted that this will be ‘the last one’, despite demand for the show to continue.

Ricky said at the time: “I’ve already made my mind up there won’t be a four.

"And you do put those things out there to make you remember as it’s tempting but... there’s an old saying that ‘to lead the orchestra, you’ve got to turn your back on the audience’.

"That’s true. The audience think they want another one, but they’re not sure. So you’ve got to be careful.”

After Life is available now on Netflix.
