Rangers have been left to lick their wounds after losing the Betfred Cup to their bitter rivals Celtic after an incredible game at Hampden.

Alfredo Morelos was denied several times by the brilliance of Celtic keeper Fraser Forster.

The big moment came with 20 minutes to play when Jeremie Frimpong hauled down the Colombian inside the box. The defender was sent off and Rangers suddenly had an incredible chance to win the game.

Morelos fired the penalty too close to the keeper and the big Geordie was able to palm the ball clear leaving Steven Gerrard gutted.

Here's how the Gers players rated at Hampden .

Allan McGregor 6 – Could do nothing about the opening goal as it was smashed in from yards out. Given how much his opposite number had to do he will wonder how he lost.

James Tavernier 6 – A constant menace on the overlap down the right but the skipper continued to be suspect defensively. Set-pieces caused Celtic trouble at times.

Filip Helander 6 (Katic 84) – Relatively composed all game but lost Christopher Jullien for the winning goal. Brilliant intervention denied Odsonne Edouard.

Connor Goldson 5 – The central defender had several good opportunities from set-pieces and one should have ended up in the net. Clumsy challenge led to Celtic’s winner.

Borna Barisic 6 – Left-back passed fit and was up against the rapid pairing of James Forrest and Jeremie Frimpong. Normally excellent at crossing but his delivery was off.

Ryan Jack and Mohamed Elyounoussi

Ryan Jack 7 – Composed in midfield and nearly opened the scoring with an excellent shot from range. Shook off a nasty knee knock and didn’t deserve to be on losing side.

Glen Kamara 5 (Defoe 70) – Rather average showing from the Finnish midfielder and was hooked as Rangers chased the game. The occasion passed him by.

Scott Arfield 6 – In Steven Davis’ absence, Arfield was deployed in midfield rather than his usual advanced role and couldn’t threaten. Rash challenge could have seen him sent off.

Ryan Kent 6 – For all his fancy footwork the £7million man did little to make a difference. Met his match in Jeremie Frimpong before he was red-carded.

Alfredo Morelos 5 – Decision to give the Colombian the penalty heaped pressure on him that led to miss. Did many things right but was lashing at chances. The unwanted streak continues.

Joe Aribo 6 (Barker 74)  – Played in right-wing but sat narrow and operated more like a fourth midfielder. Carried little threat and Jonny Hayes marshalled him well.

Subs: Jermain Defoe 4 – Brought on as Rangers chased the game but couldn’t contribute.

Brandon Barker 3 – Came on to add width but did little.

Nikola Katic 2 – On to add set-piece threat.

Subs not used: Foderingham, Ojo, Flanagan, Stewart

Booked: Kamara, Arfield, Aribo
