Queen staying clear of 'enormous mess' as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry chaos erupts

Queen's ‘focus’ on Philip despite Harry’s interview says expert

The Queen will unlikely be blamed for anything in the wake of the row between the palace and the Sussexes as she has kept herself out of it, according to royal author Clive Irving. He said: "She fully and clearly understands that whatever the mess underneath her, the monarch had to be above it.

"You see this right now, with this enormous mess going on, that you won’t find the Queen’s fingerprints on anything."

Mr Irving went on to suggest the Queen, who has been married for 73 years to Prince Philip, may decide to step down as monarch if he dies before her.

He told the Mirror: "She must be very preoccupied with Philip’s condition, he’s very important in her life and one wonders if she’ll want to go on being Queen after he dies.

"It’s going to seem like another episode in this great royal soap opera that she’s going to want to stay out of.

"She is above all that, she’s safely in her bubble.

"However this unfolds, no one is going to blame the Queen.

"I suspect that is how she wants it.

"If the monarch is untouched, the monarchy will survive.”

The Queen is known to have remained in touch with Meghan and Prince Harry throughout 2020.

In January, royal expert Katie Nicholl said the monarch "is always delighted to see Archie on video calls and it's very important to her that she touches base with Harry."

She added: "The Queen has kept in close contact with Harry and Meghan for the past year.

"She's in touch with them, she knows what's going on in their lives, they discuss their plans with her.

"Harry has always seen his grandmother as a mentor and while he might be in LA, that hasn't changed."

In late February, Prince Harry himself opened up on his relationship with the Queen during one episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Revealing he has spoken via video call with both the monarch and Prince Philip during 2020, Harry said: "We've Zoomed them a few times, they've seen Archie running around."

Speaking about how the Duke of Edinburgh ends his calls, Harry added: "My grandfather, instead of pressing leave meeting, he just goes [signals closing a laptop]."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have recorded a two-hour-long interview with Oprah Winfrey in February, which is set to air in the US on Sunday.

As anticipated by a clip released yesterday by US network CBS, the Duchess of Sussex has spoken about the palace and the Royal Family.

n the clip, US journalist Oprah asked Meghan: "How do you feel about the palace hearing you speak your truth today?"

To which the Duchess of Sussex replied: "I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.

"And if that comes with risk of losing things, I mean, I've...there's a lot that's been lost already."

Meghan is also at the centre of bullying claims reported by The Times, dating back to 2018.

Her lawyers have strongly denied these allegations, branding them a "smear campaign".

Buckingham Palace has announced its "HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article."
