A pub on the edge of the Peak District serves 'ridiculously cheap' food, with appetisers starting from just £1.30- and the twist is, it’s a completely vegan menu.

The Globe is situated in the picturesque town of Glossop, and has been offering plant-based fare for more than a decade, with prices barely rising since it began.

The market town on the far side of Ashton sits just over the Greater Manchester border in Derbyshire, and has become something of a foodie hotspot of late, following its neighbours Ramsbottom, Uppermill and Hebden Bridge.

Speaking previously to Manchester Evening News, owners Ron Brookes and Diana Virgo said that the completely plant-based menu has never put off potential customers, as most people can’t taste the difference between their vegan dishes and a traditional meat offering.

“It’s proved very popular. We’re very busy, even though I guess there are not that many vegans in Glossop.” Ron said.

"We get people coming in where the wife might be a veggie and the husband a meat eater. They might choose one of our veggie burgers or sausages which, with a savoury gravy on top, means he can’t really tell any difference from eating meat."

Diana turned vegan 37 years ago in a bid to help the planet and passed her passion on to husband Ron.

“It takes ten pounds of plant protein to produce one pound of animal protein. Most of the crops grown are fed to animals. If we didn’t do that, everyone in the world would get fed.” She added.

"There are more vegans on the planet than non-vegans. It’s only the western world which relies on meat and dairy products whereas in the east – until recently at any rate – they tend to rely more on a soya- based diet."

The pub looks traditional from the outside, but the interior is decorated with floral print and vintage decor, with decorative flowers entwined around the ceiling beams.

The food has been consistently praised by customers over the years, with one customer calling it ‘a Glossop institution’ providing 'delicious, filling, meal for under a fiver.’

There’s a selection of starters such as olives, spring rolls and hummus and pitta, with prices starting from £1.30.

Main meals include chilli, Keema and chickpea and spinach curry all for £4.30, with burgers starting from £4.80 and dessert comes in the form of homemade ice cream, chocolate cake or butterscotch cake.

There’s also an extensive selection of local ales, as well as wines and the usual options of spirits.

One reviewer commented on Facebook: “Being able to order a drink and delicious food at a pub without having to ask if it's vegan is amazing in itself.

“But this pub is a lot more with the friendly staff and warm atmosphere. I haven't been a pub goer for some years, even before restrictions but I loved the experience and will be back.”

Another added: “Stayed one night in Glossop this week and we'd heard good things about The Globe so we thought we'd give it a go. We were not disappointed!

“We didn't book in advance and despite everywhere being very busy due to 'Eat out to Help Out’ we were found a table very quickly in the beer garden, which had a gazebo over it in case of rain.

“The lady serving us and all the other staff we saw were very friendly and helpful. My wife ordered the chickpea curry with tofu and I ordered the vegan chilli. Both were really tasty and filling - you really wouldn't know they were vegan.

“Can't believe the value for money-our main courses were £5 and £4 even without Rishi Sunak's help- and we were completely full when we'd finished them. Would recommend The Globe without hesitation and would happily go back next time we are in Glossop.”
