Pub could be haunted house

YOU could be in high spirits, literally, if you manage to get your hands on a former haunted pub in Blackburn.

Plans have been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council by Khalid Khan of Khalid Khan & Associates on Whalley Range on behalf of Arifa Saiyad to turn the ex-Quarrymans Pub on Dukes Brow in Revidge into a house.

The historic pub was featured in the Lancashire Telegraph in 2009 when managers thought they had a spooky new customer - a ghost called Albert who died there hundreds of years ago.

Simeon Noble, landlord of the Quarryman’s Arms, Blackburn, and partner Lucy Jackson said there was no other explanation for supernatural goings-on at the inn, including unexplained footsteps and lights and gas supplies being turned on and off.

It was claimed by the medium that the ghost of a former bar worker that fell in to the cellar and died. The pub dates from the 18th century when it was used by workers from a quarry.

It was renamed the Duck and Puddle in the 1990s but then reverted back to the Quarrymans in September 2009.

Stephen Hughes, from the Closed Pubs of Blackburn Facebook Group, said: “It has stayed up for sale for so long as it has no outdoor space, double yellow lines outside so where can people park. Internally it is also very small and is not a great size for a home.

“It is a great shame as these were formerly important social hubs of the local communities where residents could catch up over a pint and perhaps enjoy a game of pool or darts.

“Sadly in more recent years, a combination of the smoking ban, changes in consumer behaviour and cheap supermarket drink prices have seen a considerable drop in demand. Eventually many of these pubs are simply sold off and converted into small supermarkets or homes.”

In the heritage statement along with the plans, it said: “It is proposed that the new change of use will respond positively and enhance, and have a positive contribution on the Conservation Area, by bringing a disused building back into use.”
