The founder of one of the UK’s largest pub chain businesses, Punch Taverns, has said the Prime Minister’s new tier policy will “destroy” the hospitality and retail industries, and the lives of those employed by them.

Hugh Osmond told Sky’s Sophy Ridge On Sunday: “I think sometimes that these politicians live in another world, they live in something of an ivory tower…

“All this talk of levelling up… if he (Boris Johnson) destroys the hospitality industry and the retail industry, which are the biggest employers of young people, the biggest offerers of entry-level jobs… if he destroys all those jobs and businesses, he will not achieve his levelling up.

“There will be extensive misery, more health problems, more suicides, more deaths, and a much worse economy than he could ever imagine.

“He needs to get out and meet some of the people whose lives he is destroying.”

The new tier system is due to come into force on December 2 when the current lockdown in England ends.

There are three tier levels based on how high the level of infection of Covid is.

In Tier 2 pubs can only serve alcohol with a substantial meal and must offer tale service only.

In Tier Three pubs can opnly poffer takeaway and delivery.
