Lionel Messi is in contention to play against Manchester City on Tuesday evening after he was named in Paris Saint-Germain's squad for the match.

Messi has had a slow start to life in Paris since his shock move from Barcelona, with injuries restricting him to just three appearances so far and he is yet to score for his new club.

The Argentine has been sidelined for the last two league games and was also a doubt for the visit of City and his old mentor Pep Guardiola to Le Parc des Princes in the Champions League.

Ahead of the game, however, PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino was confident that Messi would be in the squad after he took part in Monday's training session.

"[Messi] is progressing very well and I think he'll be in the squad, but I don't know if he'll start," he said.

He has been proven right, with Messi declared fit enough to be named in the 23-man squad - as has midfielder Marco Veratti after a knee injury kept him out of action for the last five matches.

However, the Parisians will be without the suspended Angel Di Maria, Sergio Ramos - who is yet to make his debut due to a calf injury - Rafinha and Juan Bernat.

Guardiola will be happy with the news of Messi's availability after he said he hoped that the six time Ballon d'Or winner would be able to play.

He said: "We were fortunate to see him during this 16 years or however long his career, Messi speaks for itself. Not have to describe him or talk about him. His career is exceptional. Hopefully tomorrow he can play for the benefit of the game."
