Prince William channeled James Bond while appearing at his inaugural Earthshot Prize gala event on Sunday.

The Duke of Cambridge, 39, won praise by his fans for his look, which saw him wearing a green velvet tuxedo with a black bottleneck underneath.

People hastily took to Twitter to point out the striking likeness to the 007 character, with fans asking: "Is Prince William the next James Bond?"

Another said: "William rocking the James Bond look! This is an amazing show!"

One Tweeted went all the way to suggest the Duke of Cambridge should replace Bond altogether.

"I think Prince William should replace James Bond, seriously."

Prince William arrived at the event on Sunday night wearing 20-year-old trousers and the same jacket previously sported at an anniversary gala for charity Centrepoint in 2019, with a black bottleneck underneath.

His wife Kate Middleton, 39, also stunned in a recycled lilac Alexander McQueen gown she wore at the BAFTAs in Los Angeles back in 2011.

The Cambridges, who have been vocal about the environment, told guests, which ranged from Harry Potter's Emma Watson to A-list singer Ed Sheeran, to "consider the environment when choosing their outfit" for the bash.

The couple arrived in an electric Audi before walking the "green carpet" rolled out for the event at Alexandra Palace, London.

William launched his prize to find solutions to the planet's environmental problems and overcome the pessimism felt by many on its future.

Judges include broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, actress Cate Blanchett and singer Shakira.

During the ceremony, in a short film recorded in the London Eye, William said: "We are alive in the most consequential time in human history.

"The actions we choose or choose not to take in the next 10 years will determine the fate of the planet for the next thousand.

"A decade doesn't seem long, but humankind has an outstanding record of being able to solve the unsolvable.

"Many of the answers are already out there... but we need everyone - from all parts of society - to raise their ambition and unite in repairing our planet.

"The future is ours to determine. And if we set our minds to it, nothing is impossible."

Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and KSI performed during the awards ceremony and actors Watson, Dame Emma and David Oyelowo, and Liverpool FC striker Mo Salah handed out the prizes.

Towards the end of the event, dad-of-three Prince William announced the next Earthshot will take place in America, given it was the nation "to inspire the Moonshot".

"I hope you agree that London and the U.K. has put on quite a show for our first year.

"So, for the second year, we need to pass the baton to a country whose leadership is essential for all five of our Earthshots.

"Where better than the nation that inspired the Moonshot all those years ago. I'm delighted to announce that the Earthshot Prize will be heading to the United States of America in 2022."
