Prince Charles says Duke would be 'amazed' by caring reaction

Prince Philip: Anti-royalists criticised for not 'taking a break' by Tousi

The Prince of Wales, 72, added: “My family and I miss my father enormously.” He said Prince Philip would have been “amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him”. Charles said he and his family were “deeply grateful”.

Speaking from Highgrove House, the heir to the throne thanked the nation and those around the world who paid their respects as it will “sustain us in this particular loss and at this particularly sad time”.

The Prince was composed as he made the short heartfelt speech and said: “As you can imagine, my family and I miss my father enormously.

“He was a much loved and appreciated figure and apart from anything else, I can imagine, he would be so deeply touched by the number of other people here and elsewhere around the world and the Commonwealth, who also I think, share our loss and our sorrow.

“My dear Papa was a very special person who I think above all else would have been amazed by the reaction and the touching things that have been said about him and from that point of view we are, my family, deeply grateful for all that.”

Charles had rushed from his Gloucestershire home to Windsor Castle on Friday to comfort the Queen in the hours after Philip, 99, died peacefully in his sleep.

He returned to Highgrove on Friday evening but will continue to offer guidance as his mother, 94, finalises the arrangements for her husband’s funeral over the coming days.

During Philip’s last, and longest, hospital stay, Charles paid a visit to him at King Edward VII’s in central London in February.

The Royal Family’s official social media site yesterday also shared a tender quote from the Queen about Philip marking their golden wedding anniversary in 1997.

It read: “He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.”

Earlier, a tearful Countess of Wessex praised the Queen as “amazing” as family members rallied as the monarch grieved after 73 years of marriage and 69 years on the throne.

Prince Edward, 57, arrived at the castle, where the Queen has been staying during the pandemic, in a blue Land Rover Discovery alongside his wife Sophie, 56.

After spending an hour they drove out with their windows down, showing their appreciation to mourners who had gathered.

Sophie was visibly upset as she greeted them and said: “The Queen has been amazing.” She is known to be very close to her mother-in-law. Philip taught her to carriage drive.

Prince Andrew, 61, who lives nearby in Windsor Great Park, was also seen visiting. It is not known whether Princess Anne, 70, has called on her mother yet.

Charles was not always thought to have had the easiest of relationships with his father. Philip once said: “He’s a romantic and I’m a pragmatist. That means we see things differently.” However, in a BBC tribute on Friday evening, all four of Philip’s children paid tribute to him as someone who had encouraged and supported them.

The Queen can also turn to her trusted and loyal servants, including Angela Kelly, her senior dresser and personal assistant, who is a trusted confidante.

The monarch was recently given two new puppies, a corgi called Muick and a dorgi named Fergus. They joined her elderly dorgi Candy. Dogs have been constant companions during her reign.
