Prince Charles reign as king 'risks' monarchy going ‘over cliff very fast’ author claims

Prince Charles: Royal expert discusses relationship with Andrew

Journalist and author Clive Irving has just released his new book called "The Last Queen: Elizabeth II’s Seventy Year Battle to Save the House of Windsor". The book traces how Queen Elizabeth II has managed successfully to preserve the monarchy in a fast changing world. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he argues that the secret of her success lies partly in her ability to preserve the "mystique of the monarch herself, a kind of unknowability."

However, Mr Irving is very fearful that the monarchy will not survive under Prince Charles.

In an astonishing attack on the Prince of Wales, he criticises the future King of England for thinking like an autocrat, being a hypocrite and unable to understand the modern world.

The royal biographer said: "Charles has a serious problem. One problem is that he doesn’t look like an invigorating generational shift, does he?

"That’s what would be needed, something that reinvigorates and sends a sense that they’ve understood the modern world."

He explained: "In some ways, Charles looks older than the queen. He’s a man more suited to the 18th century than the 21st, and I’m not being facetious about that.

"That’s his deliberate and chosen style, like a younger brother of the queen rather than a son."

Mr Irving also claims that Prince Charles has the wealth and means to do a lot more with his philanthropy than he is currently doing.

The Queen turns 95 in April and this has led to speculation that she could retire as husband Prince Philip was 96 when he retired.

However, Buckingham Palace has said the Queen has no intention of stepping down.

Mr Irving also spoke about the issue on Sky News Australia.

He told viewers: “The prospect of Charles III is pretty frightening, I think.

“He's not a figure of the moment.

"Whereas William and Kate have fit into the family very well.

"They know and they understand the system."
