Prince Charles heartbreak: Duke may be forced to give up his lifetime passion as King

Prince Charles may be pressured into giving up his climate change activism when he ascends to the throne, according to an expert. The Prince of Wales has been long committed to championing environmental and sustainable causes. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams explained why to Express.co.uk when speaking about the changes Charles will encounter when he becomes King.

He said: "The way it would have to be handled would change a lot for him.

"He would read the speech from the throne, he would give his Christmas message which might very well have a flavour of that in it.

"Remember this issue isn't party politics, it is a standard.

"The Prince began his campaign years ago, he's been campaigning for over half a century on the environment."

Mr Fitzwilliams continued: "Initially people simply didn't take it seriously.

"But obviously we might, for example, in his Christmas broadcast, get a mention of it.

"But remember it isn't a party political issue, it is something that almost all governments in the world now support. That is the reduction of carbon emissions.

"So the Prince wouldn't be straying into controversial territory by mentioning it."

The royal commentator added: "But you wouldn't expect him to, in any sense, be a campaigning monarch.

"And in his 70th birthday interview, he said he wouldn't be, it just isn't the job.

"As I said, the Christmas broadcast and his weekly audiences with the Prime Minister can be spheres where he can mention it."

At the 2020 World Economic Forum in Davos, the Prince meet young climate activist Greta Thunberg and gave a passionate speech about climate change.

He said: "Do we want to go down in history as the people who did nothing to bring the world back from the brink in time to restore the balance when we could have done? I don't want to."

The Prince of Wales also used the conference to announce his new Sustainable Markets initiative, which urges businesses to put the Earth first in how they operate.

However, in a BBC documentary to mark his 70th birthday, Charles said the idea that he would continue making interventions was "nonsense".

He said he would have to operate within "constitutional parameters".
