A keen runner is gearing up to complete 55 miles on her 55th birthday to raise £555 for a charity who save lives at sea.

Susan Gray, 54, from Prestwick, will run 210 laps of the town’s 400m blaze race track at the Oval on Friday, May 21 to coin in cash for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Susan, who is also a wild swimmer and paddle boarder, said: “I just wanted to do something to mark turning 55.

“I do a lot of ultra-running and have done Ironman triathlons and I just thought, 'I want a challenge'. I like to do crazy things.

“Last year was a bit of a write-off as I’d entered a lot of races and they’d all been cancelled.

“I thought let’s keep the five theme going and I’ll start at 5.55am and I’d like to finish it before 5.55 in the evening but it will depend on the weather and things.

Susan is hoping to complete her mammoth challenge within eight to 12 hours.

She said: “I’ve done a couple of 30-mile training runs and they’ve taken me about five to six hours, but that doesn’t include if I’ve stopped for a break.

“I chose the RNLI because I’ve joined Wild Sea Women Ayrshire and bought myself a paddle board so it just seems the logical choice of charity; me living in a coastal town and there have been quite a few callouts for people recently.

“RNLI have not been able to do any of their fundraising events because they've been put on hold because of Covid.

“I hope I never need them but it is reassuring to have a local RNLI lifeboat station based in Troon that provides a valuable service to all who enjoy water based activities.”

Susan will have a collection bucket at the Oval on the day for those who can spare any change. Donations can also be made online at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/irene-gray3
