The pound sterling hit a session high on Thursday. At 9:31 am, the pound rose 0.35% against the US dollar and traded at $ 1.197. At 10:40 am, the pound was trading at about $ 1.199 per dollar.
At the last closing price yesterday, the pound was trading at $ 1.1894.
This happened when Downing confirmed that Mr Johnson would address the country later today to announce his resignation.
He will announce at 12:00 pm.
Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 Index rose 1.12 percent following media reports that the prime minister's resignation was imminent.
