Police in Lancashire were left furious at driver behaviour in the aftermath of a serious car fire on the M6 this afternoon (September 26).
The M6 was closed in both directions north of Preston after the car fire with witnesses speaking to LancsLive to say they had 'never seen anything like it'.
Lancashire Constabulary and Highways England moved quickly to reopen the northbound carriageway once the smoke from the vehicle had cleared.
However, they were hindered in their attempts to reopen the motorway and get drivers moving due to the sheer amount of people out of their cars, including some walking their dogs.
They first said: "Northbound is now open and the lane closures are being implemented southbound to allow traffic through. There are a number of people out of their cars stood on the motorway who need to return to their vehicles."
They then quickly added: "Folks this is ridiculous.
"We (the emergency services) are trying to deal with this and get you moving as soon as possible but we've been hindered getting to scene by the amount of people out of their cars and on the hard shoulder, including people walking dogs etc. It's dangerous and stupid."
There are still long delays and queuing traffic on the southbound carriageway as a result of the incident.
