A major new supermarket could be heading to the outskirts of Swadlincote after new plans were unveiled.

Aldi has revealed its plans to build a new store off Drift Road, in Castle Gresley, on land near to the new St Modwen's housing development.

Residents have already been sent a leaflet from the German retailer stating that a planning application will be submitted soon to South Derbyshire District Council.

It adds that before the application is submitted, it wants to hear what local residents have to say.

The leaflet continues: "The site is a small parcel of land located north of Drift Road, with a large proportion of the site having been earmarked by the council for employment use.

"The proposals represent a realistic and deliverable regeneration opportunity and we are working closely with the council to ensure that our proposals are the right fit for the local community and have entered pre-application discussions.

"We now wish to seek your view ahead of any formal submission."

The company says the proposed multi-million-pound development would create around 40 new full-time and part-time jobs for the local area.

Aldi has also launched an online public consultation asking for people's opinions on the idea.

Richard Thompson, property director at Aldi, said: "We are delighted to have secured a site for a new store to serve the south-west part of Swadlincote and we are extremely excited about the prospect of bringing our fresh, high quality, low price proposition to more customers.

"The proposals, which make good use of a site in a sustainable location, will provide further choice for shoppers.

"We believe in open consultation so we're launching a 'virtual' public consultation in order to give everyone an opportunity to review our plans. We would encourage residents to provide their questions and comments via the project website."

If plans are given the go-ahead, the new outlet would join the Aldi store already trading at Hepworth Retail Park in Swadlincote, reports DerbyshireLive.

Those interested in taking part in the consultation process can do so here.
