There's nothing like having a skate on the ice to get you in the festive spirit and there are plenty of places you can give it a whirl in Manchester this Christmas.

Whether you're looking for a rink in Manchester city centre or further afield there are a number of venues where you can put your balancing skills to the test.

If you've got little ones who might be a bit wobbly on the ice, that's OK - most places have penguins or other skating aids to keep them steady as they make their way round.

Tinsel Town at The Trafford Centre

Tinsel Town at the Trafford Centre

The Trafford Centre is promising a 'sensational outdoor experience' this Christmas with its offering of Tinsel Town and a huge 600-sq metre covered ice rink forms part of it.

Families can put their skating skills to the test at the event, outside The Orient, which also features 'a winter wonderland of rides', including 'the UK’s longest toboggan slide'.

Ice skating costs £7.50 for ages three to 15 off-peak and £9 at peak times. Adults are £9.50 and £12 respectively. Family tickets cost £30 off-peak, £35 peak.

The rink is open from now until January 3. Visit the website here to book.

Skate Manchester, Christmas Markets

Cathedral Gardens is once again hosting the main family zone for the Christmas Markets and it's home to a huge ice rink.

The Skate Manchester rink was installed early for half term and Halloween, but is now in full festive glow.

Skate Manchester tickets cost from £11 for children and from £13 for teens and adults, while a family ticket costs from £41.

The rink is open until January 3. Visit the website here to book.

Escape to Freight Island, Manchester

An ice rink in the sky has opened at Escape to Freight Island's new festive village.

Fairy lights and frosted trees have given Mayfield Depot a complete festive makeover ahead of the Christmas season.

The outdoor venue has been transformed into 'Winter Island' - the UK's largest outdoor heated market, now complete with its very own purpose-built indoor ice rink.

The new ice rink is open all week. Tickets start at £10 for adults, £8 for children. Book online where you can also find a full breakdown of the venue's upcoming events.

Unreal Xmas at Trafford Palazzo

Across the bridge from The Trafford Centre, an Unreal Xmas event is coming to Trafford Palazzo, formerly Barton Square.

Opening from December 3, it will feature a Christmas village, markets and 'a breathtaking ice skating experience through a captivating forest and snow covered world'.

Set over two floors, it is the first time that a festive experience of this scale has been hosted at TraffordCity.

Two custom-built bars will allow visitors to take in the 'magical' atmosphere and watch family and friends skate, while a skate-up bar will be available for festive refreshments ice-side.

Ice skating slots, lasting 45 minutes, cost £13 for seniors and children aged three to 12, £15 for 13 plus, or £40 for a family. Tickets can be booked on site and pre-booked via the website here, where you can also get more information on the event.

Christmas By The Sea, Blackpool

If you don't mind travelling a bit further afield there's a free ice rink in Blackpool this Christmas.

Blackpool’s Tower Festival Headland has been transformed for the first event of its kind - complete with the Illuminations as a backdrop.

As well as the 'centrepiece' ice rink, Blackpool By The Sea features log cabins serving a range of festive treats, a magical forest, 'larger-than-life' light installations and Santa tram rides on the Golden Mile.

And as the town rarely gets snow because of its fresh salt air and close proximity to the Irish Sea, there'll be making their own winter wonderland with special cannons producing simulated snowfalls.

The much-loved Blackpool Tower is also coming alive each evening with Frost Fairies, a newly-created 3D light projection show.
