A mother and father who left their toddler to drown in a bath while they went supermarket shopping will avoid jail time.

Eddy Louis, 55, and Sabina Lewis, 26, were sentenced to probation on Friday in Minneapolis, Minnesota after they both pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter for the death of their 21-month-old son in September 2019.

The couple went shopping to Walmart and Sam’s Club in the morning and thought their kids were asleep when they left the home, a criminal complaint said.

When the couple came back home, the oldest child was still sleeping, but their 4-year-old was in the bathroom, and the baby was in the bathtub.

The 4-year-old was attempting to give the baby a bath, which led to the baby drowning in the tub.

The couple told police that they thought the kids would continue sleeping until they returned home from shopping.

They have been sentenced to six months of home monitoring, three years of probation and 150 hours of community service.

The couple must also take part in family therapy and complete a parenting class, according to the sentencing.
