Six new cases of the "worrying" new Omicron variant have been detected in the UK.

The Scottish Government said teams have commenced contact tracing after the new cases were discovered there, bringing the total to nine.

Meanwhile, two people in Chelmsford and Nottingham were found to have the new variant after testing positive and are self-isolating, the Government confirmed on Saturday.

A third was also found, although that person is no longer in the UK.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid has brought in new travel restrictions after the variant, officially named as the 'Omicron' variant by the World Health Organisation (WHO), was detected in the UK.

He will make an announcement today outlining new rules, including on mandatory mask wearing from Tuesday.

First cases of the new variant were initially detected in South Africa and UK-bound flights from the country, along with several other African nations, have been grounded.

The places where masks will be obligatory

Masks will be mandatory in more than just shops from tomorrow, the Government says.

From 4am, face coverings will be compulsory in shops and other settings such as banks, post offices and hairdressers, as well as on public transport unless individuals are exempt from doing so.

Scotland’s Deputy First Minister John Swinney has said that some of the Omicron variant cases identified in Scotland have no travel history, which suggests there is a degree of community transmission.

Six cases have been identified in Scotland after three cases were found in England.
