Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has found himself under significant pressure at Old Trafford after a dismal run of one point from four Premier League games.

The Manchester United manager suffered his heaviest defeat in over a year last weekend as his team lost 5-0 at home to Liverpool, and his future in the job reportedly rests on the results of three big games in the coming days.

However, even if he avoids the sack at this juncture, Solskjaer is likely to face an ultimatum before the end of his third full season as manager, as his wait for a first trophy as United boss continues.

That's according to former United defender Mikael Silvestre, who was a team-mate of the Norwegian for several years under Sir Alex Ferguson and played with him in several title-winning sides.

Silvestre won four Premier League titles as a United player and was on the bench for their Champions League win in 2008.

He played with Solskjaer throughout those league wins, and the pair started together as the Red Devils won the 1999 Intercontinental Cup against Palmeiras, Silvestre's first trophy with the club.

The Frenchman knows the importance of success at Old Trafford, and he recognises that Solskjaer does as well.

This is why, speaking to MyBettingSites, the 44-year-old said "Ole Gunnar Solskjær must win a trophy this season and he’ll be aware of that.”

"[He must win one] for the players, the manager and for the club as it is in the DNA of Manchester United," Silvestre said.

"They were so close last season with the Europa League and I’m sure they’ll use that as extra motivation for this year to push them over the line.

"The team has all the ingredients to win trophies and be successful, but it’s about turning up on the day and finishing the job."

Solskjaer's predecessors Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal both won trophies during their time at the club.

Van Gaal won the FA Cup in 2016 and Mourinho led United to League Cup and Europa League glory the following season.

Solskjaer has been at the club longer than both men, having arrived in December 2018, but the closest he has come to a trophy is defeat in last season's Europa League final against Villarreal.

United's next Premier League game is against Tottenham, who handed Solskjaer one of the worst defeats of his spell in charge when they hit six goals in October 2020.

After that, there's a trip to Bergamo to face Atalanta in the Champions League, followed by a league derby against Manchester City.

Even if Solskjaer survives that run and makes it into the international break with his job intact, there will be plenty of work still to do.
