Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has urged his old club to make a move for Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne this summer.
During the 2020/21 season, Insigne scored 19 goals and registered another seven assists in 35 Serie A outings.
But the 30-year-old has now entered the final 12 months of a contract in Naples and it appears that his future may lie away from the Serie A side.
That is because, speaking last month, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis suggested that the club could be forced to wave goodbye to the forward.
He said: “Insigne is a product of the academy and future depends on him. If he is tired of Napoli and wants to go around Europe, it’s his choice, not ours.”
Insigne played a key role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph and admitted before the tournament that his focus was solely on the international competition amid links to Lazio.
He said: “My future? I am only thinking of playing the European Championship, after that there is time to talk to the club.
“Lazio rumours? It came out that Immobile was the manager here to bring me but that’s not true. He didn’t tell me anything. We are friends, we will go on vacation together and we haven’t talked about this.“
And speaking ahead of the new season, Johnson believes Insigne would suit the way Liverpool play and that they should also be eyeing a move for Marco Verratti.

“I really like Lorenzo Insigne. He’s been brilliant for years, but he performed very well during the Euros. I just enjoy the way he plays and I think he would suit Liverpool too,” he told BettingOdds.com.
“I like Marco Verratti as well. They’re two huge names so it’s not rocket science choosing them as ideal signings for Liverpool.
“During the Euros you could see both of their desire to win and that’s what’s needed if you’re going to win league titles. You need those sorts of characters.”
