Northern Powergrid customers should be compensated quickly as they face financial difficulties in the run-up to Christmas.

That's the call from Hexham MP Guy Opperman after the company revealed it had restored power to all homes affected by Storm Arwen.

He said the company had previously confirmed it would cover costs of up to £15 per person per meal as well as other "reasonable costs" for alternative accommodation and generators.

Customers can also claim compensation of up to £140 per day they were without power, with the previous maximum cap of £700 removed by Ofgem following meetings with Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.

Mr Opperman said: "‘As power is slowly returned to communities, it is only right that questions around compensation start to be asked. People are entitled to the compensation they deserve.

"Many families have spent much of their entire monthly budget in a matter of days to cover the huge costs faced. Without any commitment to when expenses will be reimbursed and compensation paid, families across Tynedale and Ponteland are facing huge uncertainty at an extremely expensive time of the year in the lead up to Christmas.

"It is very positive news that Northern Powergrid say they believe all power has now been restored. However, I will not stop until my constituents are fully reimbursed and compensated by Northern Powergrid."

Northern Powergrid have asked their customers to submit receipts and expenses via: [email protected] .

A statement from the company read: "With supplies restored, our next step will include moving quickly to make compensation payments for those customers without power for more than two days and to make any remaining payments needed to honour our financial support package. We understand the strain this has placed on our customers at a difficult time."
