Non-binaty singer Sam Smith has asked fans to give them a new female name after donning a black wig and fur coat in a dramatic new look.

Sam, 27, joked they wanted their Instagram followers to choose their new name after posting a snap posing in a black wig and burgundy coat.

The singer posted the snap debuting their new look with the caption: “What’s her name?”

One proposed Sonia Jackson, while others chimed in with names such as Samantha Star, Shannon, “Patricia, but the gals call her Fritz,” and Kharisma Kardashian.

After identifying as genderqueer in 2017, Sam bravely revealed their non-binary gender in March 2019 and has since been embracing their true self since.

Sam spoke candidly about being non-binary in September, telling fans that they define themselves as neither masculine or feminine.

They did an interview with Jameela Jamil, in which the two stars discussed the topics of gender and identity.

Sam said: "You do not identify in a gender.

Sam told fans that they define themselves as neither masculine or feminine

"You are just you. You are your own special creation. That is how I take it. I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between - somewhat on the spectrum."

They added: "I've always had a bit of a war in my body and my mind...I do think like a woman in my head at time.

"I've sometimes sat there and questioned, 'Do I want a sex change?' It's something I still think about, but I don't think it is.

"I've tried to change that into my thoughts on gender...when I move, when I have sex with men, it's very feminine. I'm feminine in many ways - and I've resented that."
