Newmarket Races: Tips, racecards, odds, runners and best bets for Day 1 of Cambridgeshire Meeting on ITV Racing today

AFTER another pilot event was scrapped at the last minute, Newmarket's Cambridgeshire Meeting kicks off behind closed doors.

Thankfully the racing is worth writing home about. Our man Callum Jamieson takes a look at Day 1.

Race 2 - 1.50 Bentley Motors Nursery Handicap

A strong looking nursery gets us underway, even if only five runners are set to go to post.

LAST SUNSET looks nicely treated on her last run at Ascot where she bumped into a smart Roger Charlton horse.

Even though she's been beat the last twice after winning on debut, she has improved steadily and a mark of 84 looks generous if she can kick on again.

Bottom of the weights is Olympic Theatre and he looks a threat. He's still a maiden but a mark of 71 looks tempting.

Richard Hughes' Lightening Shore is worth a market check on handicap debut.

Then both rated in the 90s, Mark Of The Man and Lost In Space set the standard. They may be vulnerable to an improver though and that's why I side with Saeed bin Suroor's hope.

Race 3 - 2.25 British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies' Handicap

Top weight STORMY GIRL can outclass this middling field of fillies.

Rebecca Menzies' has been a constant in stakes races this season and looks well-placed to strike here.

She has to give away plenty of weight but these are much calmer waters than what she's been swimming in. She's the one to beat.

It doesn't look the strongest of races, but Flippa The Strippa looks on a tempting enough mark.

She was second last time and why this is tougher, that was her best run for a while. She's probably the danger with Will Buick back in the saddle.

Caspian Queen and Lady Of Aran both look like they need some help from the handicapper first.

Betsey Trotter is up 6lbs for her win last time out and cannot be ignored.

SELECTION: Stormy Girl

Race 4 - 3.00 Tattersalls Stakes (Group 3)

This is a good little race on paper, albeit not the greatest betting heat.

Charlie Appleby's La Barrosa heads the betting after his impressive Ascot debut win. That looked a strong race and he put up good numbers in the process.

He firmly falls into the 'could be anything' category but at a shade of odds-on would not be a bet for me. I'm happy to watch.

He faces off against multiple horses rated in the 100s and the consistent Yazaman looks the main danger on paper.

But four seconds in good races have been frustrating for followers and yet again he might just find one or two too sharp.

Ventura Tormenta is a Group 2 winner and the top-rated of these. But he's been fairly average since his win in France and has to give 5lbs away all round.

I'm therefore willing to give Mark Johnston's QAADER another chance and he's worth a small bet at current odds of around 8-1.

His Coventry second was by far his best run and he might have won that on another day. He's not reached that level since but has had reason to forgive.

The ground came up soft at Newmarket and Goodwood he was never in the race. He looks a tad over-priced albeit he's on last chance saloon now.

Race 5 - 3.35 Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes (Listed Race)

Another small field and it's hard to find much of a betting angle in to this.

Mildenberger heads the market, and has improved for running over two miles but is far from consistent in terms of getting his head in front.

This is arguably his easiest task for a while, but he's been off since June and hasn't run on turf since May 2019.

He wouldn't be for me at the odds, far from it.

Withhold has been largely disappointing of late, in fact for much of the season.

Roger Charlton's horse failed to build on his Listed win in August and that was only a four-runner affair. I'd be against him too.

GHOSTWATCH could improve for the step up in trip and may be worth a small bet for win only purposes.

He doesn't have much to find on paper and if he stays he should go close. Market support beforehand would be a plus with the Charlie Appleby string coming into strong form again.

Ranch Hand would appreciate any rain that falls beforehand. He could be a player too, if it comes.
